Zelos comes from the KRATOS PATH wherein he decides to have the party kill him rather than continue on their journey.

Lloyd in this path was WISHY-WASHY and RELIED ON KRATOS. He was not as resolutely committed to forging his own path as he needs to be in order to have Zelos' affection rank the highest. Zelos also often felt like an outsider in the party and did not closely bond with anyone, though he tried to. And though he came around to believing in what they were trying to do and was moved by Lloyd's compassion and refusal to accept the world as it was he was unable to fully place his trust in Lloyd. And when Lloyd, after accepting Mithos without a second thought, turned to Zelos and questioned whether or not he could trust him, Zelos decided then and there he was done and could not continue living as he felt as though he was nothing but a burden and they would truly be better off without him. Going in to the battle he knew he would not walk away alive and that his death would guarantee that Seles' was freed from the abbey, one way or another.

Zelos is something of an acquired taste - one people would like a lot more if he wasn't constantly playing up his worst habits. His crippling inferiority complex and self loathing hides behind a fool's mask, playing it up as though he believes himself to be the Goddess' gift to the world. The citizens of Tethe'alla tolerate him because of his social status and influence, hoping to use him to further their own social status. Zelos keeps the party at arm's length and chooses to take their annoyance with him as a true reflection of their feelings, rather than one he's brought on himself with his obnoxious act.

A trait inherited by his mother. Zelos is the kind of person who smiles no matter what is happening to him or around him. His pain is buried underneath jokes, his true feelings buried underneath sarcasm and flippant remarks. Few people know just how true some of his throwaway lines ring, as the moment someone touches on something real Zelos is quick to infuriate and misdirect their attention.

Zelos makes a point to seem as though he isn't aware of what's happening around him. The bigger the idiot act he puts on, the less anyone notices or cares what he's doing. He's a master at diverting attention and pulling it back when needed.

Yet he's not one to mince words about how he feels. Zelos is sharp and to the point when a line has been crossed for him. He is the friend who will grab your shoulders and tell you when you've fucked up, and he is the friend who will hold you to your word.

Though Zelos is certain that she hates him, Seles is Zelos' world.

As far as he's concerned, his friends would be happier without him in their lives. This is plain to see as Zelos plays matchmaker with both Sheena and Lloyd despite his own interest in them, and he plans to die so Seles can inherit everything he has. He believes himself to be a stain upon their lives and has no qualms at all with quietly disappearing so that they can have a better life.

What a sorry way to go.
